The 8th grade curriculum presents literature about building character through personal struggle. We will learn how characters in historical settings persevered through hardship, and learn about tolerance on many levels: race, religion, appearance, and economic status. This fits in with my classroom community of respecting each other and developing a learning community. This parallels the student's journey as they are asked to work hard, persevere and value the struggle it takes to be a good reader and writer of literature. They are also encouraged to stay positive when things get tough because failure can lead to future success.

Literary Quote of the Week“There are things you can't back down on, things you gotta take a stand on. But it's up to you to decide what them things are. You have to demand respect in this world, ain't nobody just gonna hand it to you. How you carry yourself, what you stand for--that's how you gain respect. But, little one, ain't nobody's respect worth more than your own.”
